July 2020 Prayer Letter
Only GOD
As the tears silently leaped from my cheek and onto my folded hands, the words blurred. Written in a delicate script, they hung above the casket. Only God. Truly, if you knew Pastor Shane Lewis, you know how fitting these words are to describe his life. As person after person stood behind the pulpit that day and talked about a man whom God used to turn Somerville, Alabama upside down, I could not help but imagine my own funeral someday. What would be said of me?
My prayer is that “Only God” could also be a testament of the work in Peru.
“Only God” is also a testament of the miraculous recovery of Pastor Austin Gardner. We cannot thank you enough for your prayers on his behalf. After three weeks on a ventilator and almost a month in the hospital, to see him back at church this past Sunday, well, the most fitting words that come to mind are, “Only God!” Thank you for interceding on Pastor Gardner’s behalf.
We have gotten many questions recently about what our “new deputation” looks like. I must admit, there is much that has changed in the last several months, particularly the amount of hand sanitizer that we use. The most important things, however, have stayed the same, from getting to worship our Saviour with churches all over the United States, to getting to share the Gospel with the people that the Lord brings into our life.
While door-to-door may not be as well received right now with the pandemic, it turns out that buying large quantities of multivitamins, various spices, and other items that we will not have access to in Peru is a great conversation starter with the check-out clerks! We truly are grateful for the opportunities the Lord continues to provide to witness, to share the Gospel, and to pray with hurting people. With all of our encounters this past month, without fail, we have been asked, why? Why Peru? Why are you moving to a different country in the midst of a Pandemic? While I think many of them expect me to go on about the great medical need there in Peru, because of our nursing backgrounds, that just simply is not the reason.
The only explanation is that God loved the world enough to send his Son to die on a cross as a propitiation for our sins, so that whosever believeth in him could have everlasting life. There are a lot of “whosoevers” in Peru, and they need to know the truth of the Gospel.
