A Time to Celebrate!
“Mommy! It’s a star!” Landon excitedly exclaimed as the freshly-baked sugar cookies were set to cool on the wire racks. “Yes, Landon, they are for America’s Birthday,” my wife responded to our little boy. In that instant, his jaw dropped as he started jumping in circles and yelling, “Happy Birthday ‘Merica!” Then, as quickly as it all started, his jovial celebration came to a stammering halt, as his green eyes darted around. “But mommy,” he asked, “who is America?” While we chuckled over our little boy’s confusion, his enthusiasm was contagious, and we truly do have so much to celebrate!
This past month, we were able to celebrate and be a part of two special church anniversary services. Pastor Efrain, a dear friend and the pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, invited our family to be a part of the celebration. I was able to preach in two of the services, and my wife was able to share her testimony as well. We rejoice with them with all that God is doing in this area through their church! That same week, we were also able to celebrate with El Salvador Baptist Church for their fifteenth anniversary service. This is the church that my family and I have partnered with for the past several months. El Salvador has undergone many difficulties, after losing several pastors as well as enduring very strict pandemic rules, making the church essentially a re-plant. However, as I looked around that night at all the new faces and reflected on the baptism service we had just the week prior, the first this church has had in over five years, I could not help but be in awe for all that God is doing in this church. What a reason to celebrate!
Fernando had struggled with depression. He was a young man I met last year while playing basketball in the parks, and he was one of the first young men that I had the privilege of seeing saved here in Peru. At first, he was so excited about church, about Christ, and he just could not seem to get enough of it all. After several months, some difficult times came for Fernando, and he disappeared. After not seeing from him or hearing from him for several months, Fernando showed up on February 5, 2022, the day of our little girl’s funeral. Since then, Fernando has slowing been coming back around, and the Lord seems to be using Kylie’s passing to help open some doors with him to help share how we can turn to Christ and not away from Him during our pain. Right now, he is coming to church with me every week, and we are studying the Bible together. I just cannot help but celebrate for a friend who has turned back to Christ.
