May Again

We all have one of those months. You know the one. Everyone and their brother is getting married, having a birthday party, graduating, or possibly all three, and of course, you are invited and expected to be at it all. Add Mother’s Day, which is the second biggest holiday after Christmas here in Peru, a women’s church event for Mother’s Day (but separate from Mother’s Day), a couple of missions trips, a Young Ladies Conference, and a church anniversary service, and we’ve got ourselves May. It’s the best kind of crazy, and we are so blessed to be part of all these people’s lives, but I’d definitely be lying if I said we weren’t tired after May.

You would think that Easter and Christmas would be the two most well-attended services, but here that just isn’t the case. Whether it’s due to our matriarchal society or some other reason, Mother’s Day is, without fail, our biggest outreach day of the year. We’ve been consistently reaching 150 in regular attendance, but this Mother’s Day, we had just over 250 come to our services! We had prayed and planned to make this service as evangelical as possible, and God blessed! Several hands were raised during the service for salvation decisions, and several more were able to talk with counselors after the service. What was really surprising, though, was the week after Mother’s Day. Three of our teenagers, who have been attending faithfully for months, came to different Youth Group leaders that week to talk. God used that Mother’s Day message in each of their hearts, and they each made the decision to accept Christ as their personal Saviour!

It was a year ago this May that months of door knocking finally paid off. Our neighbor had kindly rejected months and months’ worth of invitations to our church. That all changed, though, that May night when she accepted Christ as her Saviour. My wife and I have had the joy of watching Hermalinda faithfully attend, go through discipleship, participate in the Women’s Bible Studies, and even see her teenage son Luis get saved. Well, this May, Hermalinda decided to take that next step in her faith by getting baptized! Please be praying with us for Hermalinda as she continues to grow in her faith.

It was May again, and it was crazy. But I’m so glad for the crazy, and so blessed that God allows us to be a small part of it all.

Your Missionaries to Peru,
